Trump says he will talk to Mamdani if he contacts him first

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani should contact him first, though he refused to confirm whether he would initiate the communication himself. During an interview with Fox News, Trump declared it would be «more appropriate» for Mamdani to seek him out first and added that «we'll see what happens» before any meeting. The president insisted he is available for dialogue but emphasized that the initiative should come from the mayor-elect. To date, Trump has not contacted Mamdani or his team following his victory in the municipal elections held on Tuesday. In previous comments before the election, when asked about the possibility of meeting with Mamdani, Trump had said he would speak with him and felt obligated to maintain communication with local authorities, though he expressed surprise at the results. The president attacked Mamdani's victory speech, calling it «very angry» and personally directed at him, and suggested the new mayor should show more courtesy in his dealings. Trump also reminded that he has authority over the approval of certain federal funds for the city, implying that any cooperation could depend on the relationship he establishes with the new municipal administration. In his victory speech, Mamdani told the president: «Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: turn it up» and added that people like the Republican would have to pay taxes in the city.
